The Elements of Music



–Melodic: note patterns

–Harmony: produce chords
–Orchestration: compose for orchestral performance
–Rhythm: duration of notes
–Timbre: character of a musical sound
–Dynamics: variation in loudness

Music is,



–the direct language of the soul
–includes onomatopoeia
–portrays feelings and thoughts
–not world of objects
–inherently dynamic
–poetry of mind
–time made audible
–hidden arithmetical exercise of the mind
–metaphysical exercise of the soul
–supreme form of human cognition


•Music is entertainment of soul – Hedonist theory
•Music is a synthesis of Tone, Rhythm etc. – Atomist theory
•Music is universal, constant, abstract – Universalist theory

BACKGROUND :


•The word music comes from ‘Mousike’ (Greek)
•through ‘Musica’ (Latin).
•‘Mousike’ was derived from ‘Mousa ’- means to Muse.


•Music appeared at the lower stages of social development.
•Its role was primarily utilitarian.
•rhythm united people in a single process.
•close association with literature.
•it formed a similar synthesis with dance.
•musician imitates-sound.
•voice was the first musical instrument.
